Lockheed Martin Selected to Provide Gap Filler Radar Systems to Romania

SYRACUSE, NY, July 8th, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin today announced it will provide two "gap-filler" radar systems to the Romanian Ministry of Defense (MoD) under a contract worth $12 million. Romania will use the Multi Mission Surveillance Radar (MMSR) systems together with five existing AN/FPS-117 radar systems in a dual-use mode to monitor airspace in and around the country. The MMSR will act as a "gap-filler" radar, augmenting the coverage of the fixed-site radars to supply a more complete air surveillance capability. Lockheed Martin will produce the mobile radar systems for Romania at its facility in Syracuse, N.Y. in cooperation with the Romanian MoD and industry specialists.

The MMSR system is a variant of the Air Surveillance and Precision Approach Radar Control System (ASPARCS) that the U.S. Marine Corps purchased from Lockheed Martin in 2000. It is a mobile, air surveillance radar with a 100 nautical-mile capability. The MMSR system can easily be transported and deployed by three people in 30 minutes.

"We are pleased that the Romanian Ministry of Defense has decided to purchase additional radars from Lockheed Martin to supplement their existing surveillance system," said Steve Wiestling, manager of MMSR programs for Lockheed Martin. "This latest contract is the result of our proven radar expertise, the value of our product and our solid relationship with the Romanian government."
