INTRO: A car bomb explosion in Saudi Arabia has killed a British man. V-O-A's Greg LaMotte reports from our Middle East bureau in Cairo.

TEXT: Saudi Arabia is confirming that a British banker, Simon John Veness, was killed in a car bomb explosion in the capital, Riyadh. A Saudi official said it is suspected that an explosive device was planted under his four-wheel drive vehicle.

A Saudi official was quoted as saying Mr. Veness worked at Al Bank Al Saudi Al Fransi and was alone in his car when the explosion occurred around 9:45 this morning, local time.

A bomb blast last October in eastern Saudi Arabia killed two foreigners, including an American. U-S officials said they saw no connection between that explosion and the September 11th terrorist attacks in the United States.

There was a string of bombings in Saudi Arabia in late 2000 and early 2001. Seven foreigners, including five Britons, are in prison as a result of some of those bombings, that the government said were linked to illegal activities including the smuggling of alcohol, which is a lucrative trade in Saudi Arabia.

The motive for today's bombing is not yet known. An investigation is underway. (Signed)
