INTRO: U-S Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has told The Washington Times newspaper that al-Qaida and hardcore Taleban fighters in Afghanistan and Pakistan are getting more modern weapons. VOA's Mike Kellerman reports.

TEXT: In an interview with The Washington Times, Secretary Rumsfeld says the United States has evidence that al-Qaida and the Taleban are receiving fresh military equipment, weapons and medical supplies that he labels "modern stuff".

There's still "more money" and "more new things coming," he says. He declined to be more specific, but mentioned weapons caches raided by coalition troops where he says they found armored vehicles and rockets, "everything under the sun," he says.

Mr. Rumsfeld said its apparent he money to purchase sophisticated weapons has not, in his words, "dried up." He says instead of destroying the equipment and weapons, he has now ordered U-S- troops to give the best of it to the Afghan army to use. In the interview, Mr. Rumsfeld also said he expects Iraqi Leader Saddam Hussein to acquire weapons fo mass destruction even if there are U-N inspections again. (SIGNED)
