Lockheed Martin Receives $33.79 Million Contract for Army Tactical Missile Unitary Variant

DALLAS, TX, June 20th, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin has received a $33.79 million contract from the U.S. Army for 44 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) Block IA Unitary Missiles. The U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command, Huntsville, Ala., is the contracting agency. Work on the contract will be performed at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control's operations in Dallas and Horizon City, Texas.

The Army TACMS Block IA Unitary is a "Quick Reaction Program" initiative developed as a result of input from U.S. Army's soldiers who participated in the Kosovo conflict. In December 2000, Lockheed Martin was awarded the contract to develop the Army TACMS Unitary missile to rapidly deploy tactical capability for the U.S. Army. The government furnished a proven unitary warhead -- used on weapons including the SLAM, HARPOON and WAU-23/B -- and Lockheed Martin integrated it into an existing Army TACMS Block IA missile.

"We're pleased to be able to provide this life-saving capability to our soldiers," said Ron Abbott, Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control's vice president - Fire Support, adding that the first missile was delivered for flight test just four months after contract award. "The flight test was conducted in April 2001, and was a complete success. A total of 42 tactical missiles were delivered to the Army by the end of calendar year 2001, with a second contract for $17.9M awarded."

Army TACMS was the first tactical surface-to-surface missile ever fired in combat by the U.S. Army, when it was deployed in Operation Desert Storm. The Army TACMS Block IA Unitary Missile is the latest addition to the current Army TACMS Family of Munitions. The Army TACMS Block IA Unitary Missile is an all weather day/night rapid response missile that provides the Army the capability to attack high-payoff, time sensitive targets with limited collateral damage.
