ATK Awarded Contracts to Supply Independently Developed Medium-Caliber Ammunition to Air Force and Navy
Jun 20, 2002
ATK (NYSE: ATK)(Alliant Techsystems) has been awarded contracts from the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy to supply new, independently developed 20mm and 30mm ammunition with a mechanical fuze that enhances safety.
The U.S. Air Force will evaluate an initial quantity of 20mm Zirconium and PBXN-5 (ZAP) delay and superquick rounds as a possible replacement for the PGU-28 tactical ammunition currently fired from its high-performance combat aircraft. Based on the outcome of the evaluation, which will be conducted at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., the service could award ATK a contract for production quantities.
The U.S. Navy is purchasing a quantity of 30mm ZAP superquick rounds for use by the new U.S. Marine Corps Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV), which has as its main armament system the MK 44 30/40mm automatic cannon produced by ATK Gun Systems, Mesa, Ariz. The ammunition will also be used by guns on the LPD 17 San Antonio class amphibious assault ship that will transport the AAAVs into battle. The Navy has type-classified the 30mm ZAP superquick round.
ATK Ammunition Systems, Arden Hills, Minn., developed the ZAP family of medium-caliber ammunition using current product components, most notably the FMU-151/B mechanical fuze, to meet new and existing platform requirements.
ATK is a $2 billion aerospace and defense company with leading positions in propulsion, composite structures, munitions, and precision capabilities. The company, which is headquartered in Edina, Minn., employs approximately 11,300 people and has three business groups: Aerospace, Precision Systems, and Ammunition.
