ATK and Diehl Munitionssysteme Sign Agreement to Provide Ammunition for New Marine Corps Assault Vehicle
Jun 19, 2002
ATK (NYSE: ATK)(Alliant Techsystems) and Diehl Munitionssysteme GmbH & Co., Nonnweiler, Germany, have signed an agreement to provide 30mm semi-armor-piercing, high-explosive, incendiary-tracer (SAPHEI-T) ammunition with IM (insensitive munition) explosives to the U.S. Marine Corps for potential use on the service's new Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV).
Under the agreement, Diehl will provide SAPHEI-T projectile assemblies to ATK, which will load, assemble, and pack the ammunition for delivery to the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps will use the ammunition to qualify the round for use on the AAAV.
With a projected fielding date of 2008, the U.S. Marine Corps AAAV will replace aging amphibious assault vehicle systems as the service's primary combat vehicle for transporting troops on land and from ship to shore. ATK Gun Systems, Mesa, Ariz., produces the vehicle's primary armament system, the MK 44 30/40mm automatic cannon -- a derivative of the 30mm Bushmaster II automatic weapon, also produced by ATK Gun Systems.
Diehl Munitionssysteme GmbH & Co. covers all aspects of modern ammunition, including warhead technology, insensitive technology, miniaturized, gun-hardened electronics and sensor technology, algorithms and software development, and laser-beam shaping and tracking. The company is also involved in missile programs with subsystems such as fiberglass launcher structures, telemetry units, and warheads.
ATK is a $2 billion aerospace and defense company with leading positions in propulsion, composite structures, munitions, and precision capabilities. The company, which is headquartered in Edina, Minn., employs approximately 11,300 people and has three business groups: Aerospace, Precision Systems, and Ammunition.
