EADS Delivers Additional Medical and Rescue Stations

Friedrichshafen, 18 June 2002

EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company will deliver 6 further rescue stations and one medical rescue centre for the Federal Armed Forces' Medical Service. As reported on Tuesday by Dornier GmbH - a corporate unit of EADS -, the Systems & Defence Electronics Business Unit has been awarded the contract (worth approx. € 10 million) for the delivery of the new stations by the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB).

"This additional order by the Federal Armed Forces underlines the significance of our mobile medical systems for the medical service, in particular, against the background of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The additional demand strengthens our leading position in this market segment", said Dr. Stefan Zoller, President and CEO of EADS Systems & Defence Electronics.

The autonomous rescue stations allow life-saving emergency measures. The containers consist of a medical treatment room and a supply platform. The rescue centre for emergency surgery measures with subsequent intensive care encompasses a total of eleven medical functional containers for surgical preparation, surgery and intensive care, as well as clinical-chemical laboratories, central sterilisation and equipment supply units.

Johann Heitzmann, Senior Vice President of EADS Airborne Systems: "We are glad to be in a position to provide the German Armed Forces with the rescue stations and with the larger rescue centre this year, so that the Medical Service will be able to conduct further relief measures in Afghanistan".

The rescue stations and the rescue centre are modular units of the mobile "TransHospital" whose capacity is equivalent to that of a stationary 200-bed hospital.

The system is designed for extreme climatic conditions; the surgical area complies with the clinical requirements of DIN 1946. The requirements for both the special hygiene conditions and for limited autonomous operation under NBC conditions have been met. Independent power and water supplies contribute to these features. Depending on the operational requirements, various versions can be implemented.

Dornier GmbH is a corporate unit of EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company. With revenues amounting to € 30.8 billion in 2001 and more than 100,000 employees, EADS is the largest European aerospace and defence company and Number 2 world-wide. It is involved in the sectors of civil aviation, helicopters, space technology, military transport and combat aircraft, as well as defence technology and services. Among others, EADS holds an 80 per cent stake in Airbus, 75 per cent in the space company Astrium, 100 per cent in the helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter, 43 per cent in the Eurofighter programme and 37.5 per cent in the missile producer MBDA.
