BAE SYSTEMS to supply IFF consultancy services

13 Jun 2002

BAE Systems C4ISR has been awarded a contract for the supply of comprehensive consultancy services in the field of Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) by a major European nation. The company will assess a wide range of military platforms and advise the customer on optimal IFF installation solutions.

A key object of the programme, to be undertaken by C4ISR's Portsmouth, United Kingdom, based Communications & Defence Infrastructure team, is to study the means by which IFF Mk XII can be introduced into the nation's land, sea and air platforms. The addition of such a capability will allow the customer's forces to integrate with NATO forces operating Mode 4, and will also enable airborne platforms to interoperate with upgraded civil air traffic control systems and the Traffic Control Avoidance System using Mode S.

The consultancy involves in-country platform surveys, the generation of feasibility reports and functional specifications, and the definition of the integration work to be carried out by national platform design authorities. BAE Systems will also manage the provision of IFF modelling capabilities including MISPEC - the internationally recognised modelling tool for the calculation of the level of interoperability between various platforms - to the customer.

The BAE Systems team has expertise covering all aspects of IFF, including Mode 5, Mode S and platform integration. It was recently awarded contracts to manage all Royal Navy IFF post-design services and to support the United Kingdom's contribution to the NATO Air IFF Working Group.
