TRIGAT LR now also successfully tested from the Tiger helicopter
Berlin/Munich, 06 May 2002
The successful firings from a Tiger support helicopter (UH Tiger) represent a further highlight in the series of tests on the 3rd generation, long-range antitank missile system TRIGAT LR. "These new successes fit smoothly in with those of the recent past, that is to say qualification of the warhead and certification of the development work on the TRIGAT LR ammunition," commented Werner Kaltenegger, President and CEO of EADS/LFK.
The fire-and-forget system TRIGAT LR is the main armament of the Tiger helicopter. A series of dart firings was carried out recently by a UH Tiger helicopter. They were accompanied by non-firing trials. The objective of this series of trials was to verify the safe launch of the TRIGAT LR missile from its carrier and the faultfree functional chain up to target lock on and ignition of the missile engine. In more than a dozen firings, TRIGAT LR - the most up-to-date European anti-tank missile system - was able to successfully prove its capabilities.
Through these firings and those during previous tests with a Panther helicopter when the system was successfully employed against moving targets despite countermeasures, the industry has succeeded in providing complete evidence for the effective deployment of TRIGAT LR from the UH Tiger.
On the industrial side, MBDA Missile Systems and EADS/LFK are involved in the development of TRIGAT LR. In Germany, the political decision concerning industrialization and series production of TRIGAT LR is imminent. Only when equipped with TRIGAT LR will the Tiger helicopter be able to exploit its operational advantages to the full.
