Spanish police have detained a second suspected al-Qaida financier - one day after the arrest of a Syrian-born businessman suspected of helping fund the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Spain's Interior Ministry Wednesday announced the arrest of al-Qaida suspect Ghasoub al-Abrash al-Ghalyoun, who also goes by the alias "Ghusup." Authorities have named Mr. al-Ghalyoun as an associate of suspected al-Qaida financier Muhammed Galeb Kalaje Zouaydi, who police arrested on Tuesday.

Known as "Abu Talha," police allege Mr. Zouaydi runs a construction and real estate business in Spain that funded Osama bin Laden's network by sending huge amounts of cash to Islamic radicals in a number of countries. Those places include Belgium, China, Jordan, the Palestinian areas, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey and the United States.

Among the recipients of these funds was Mohammed Atta, the suspected leader of the 19 al-Qaida hijackers that carried out the September 11 attacks.

Earlier this month, Spanish police arrested al-Qaida suspect Ahmed Brahim, who they allege helped finance the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed 224 people.

Spain has arrested more than 20 al-Qaida suspects since September 11.
