F-22 Raptor Industry Team Donates 1/10th-Scale Aircraft Model to U.S. Air Force Academy
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, April 19th, 2002 -- The F-22 Raptor industry team formally donated and officially dedicated a 1/10th-scale model of the air dominance fighter jet to the United States Air Force Academy on April 18. The team is led by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., a business unit of Lockheed Martin Corp. [NYSE: LMT]. "The F-22 Raptor team is proud to donate this model and dedicate it in honor of the men and women who have been associated with the Air Force Academy," Joe Oberle, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co.'s director for Tactical Aircraft Requirements, said during the dedication ceremony at Fairchild Hall. "This model is a natural fit here at the Academy, where we bring together America's future Air Force and America's future air dominance fighter. We hope this model will inspire the current and future cadets, just as previous cadets were inspired by the other aircraft models on display around the Academy grounds."
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. donated the 6-foot-long, aerodynamically accurate model to the Air Force Academy as part of the company's educational outreach initiative. The initiative is aimed toward keeping people informed about the F-22 Raptor and our country's need for this 21st-century fighter aircraft both in adequate numbers and on schedule to meet U.S. Air Force operational requirements.
The F-22 Raptor air dominance fighter is built by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. in partnership with Boeing, powered by Pratt and Whitney engines, and made from parts and subsystems provided by approximately 1,200 subcontractors and suppliers in 46 states. Principal production activities take place at LM Aero facilities in Marietta, Ga., and Fort Worth, Texas, as well as at Boeing's plant in Seattle, Wash. Final assembly and initial flight-testing of the Raptor occurs at the Marietta factory, headquarters for the F-22 program's contractor team.
The Raptor will replace the venerable F-15 Eagle as America's premier front-line fighter jet starting in 2005. The F-22's balanced design of stealth, supercruise speed and super-agility, along with its advanced integrated avionics, will allow the F-22 to help the Pentagon shorten future wars and save American and allied lives.
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, is a leader in the design, development, systems integration, production and support of advanced military aircraft and related technologies. Its customers include the military services of the United States and allied countries throughout the world. Products include the F-16, F-22, JSF, F-117, C-5, C-27J, C-130, P-3 and U-2.
