Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Successfully Tests Unitary Warhead for Guided MLRS Rocket at White Sands Missile Range

DALLAS, TX, April 18th, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control conducted a successful static test of a new 200-pound Unitary Warhead for the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) rocket yesterday at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. The Guided Unitary MLRS program is a Lockheed Martin-funded research effort that was begun in late 2001.

The test was conducted to gather data relating to the warhead's effectiveness and ability to limit collateral damage beyond the immediate blast radius. Although data is still being evaluated, the Lockheed Martin-developed warhead performance was nominal.

"Guided MLRS is a very accurate rocket, and providing the battlefield commander with a precision unitary capability will greatly increase the effectiveness of the force," said Ron Abbott, vice president - Fire Support for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "Because this Unitary Warhead is a completely new payload package for the Guided MLRS rocket, testing enables us to analyze the warhead's effects and gather data relating to collateral damage."

A tactical version of the Guided Unitary MLRS rocket is scheduled to be tested later this year. Lockheed Martin estimates that an initial operating capability on the Guided Unitary MLRS rocket could be achieved as early as 2007.

The Guided MLRS rocket incorporates a GPS-aided inertial guidance package integrated on a product-improved rocket body. Additionally, small canards on the Guided rocket nose will provide basic maneuverability and enhance the accuracy of the system. Guided MLRS initial operational capability is scheduled for CY '05.

Guided MLRS is the next major step in the evolution of the MLRS Family of Munitions, offering advanced capabilities, reduced logistics support and precision attack. The rocket will have a range of approximately 60+ kilometers.

The Guided MLRS rocket program is an international cooperative program between the U.S., U. K., Italy, France and Germany.
