BAE SYSTEMS brings global communications capabilities to major ADF projects

17 Apr 2002

BAE Systems is drawing on its American and Australian communications capabilities in its bid for Australian Defence Force (ADF) communications projects JP2072 - Battlespace Communications, JP2008 - Satellite Communications and SEA 1442 - Naval Communications.

"We have significant new generation communications capability from our business in the United States and Australia that matches the areas the ADF is seeking to develop," said Mr Jim Birrell, Business Development Manager - C3I, BAE Systems Australia.

BAE Systems is the design authority and systems integrator for the communications suites aboard the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), the Arleigh Burke Class Guided Missile Destroyers (DDG 51) and the Ticonderoga Class (CG 47) Guided Missile Cruisers.

"These major programs for the United States Navy demonstrate BAE Systems' strong position in the planning, implementation and through life support of complex integrated naval communications systems and we plan to bring this expertise to Australia," Mr Birrell added.

In land communications, BAE Systems is the design authority for more than A$1.5 billion worth of existing Australian fielded tactical communications equipment through the Raven, Wagtail and Parakeet projects.

The company is recognised as an important niche specialist in the secure communications marketplace providing a range of products from our Canberra Special Project group.

Internationally, BAE Systems produces wireless wideband networks allowing unprecedented communication between air, sea and land forces.

"We are a key player in the development of the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program and will deliver the first fieldable product, the 2/4 channel programmable networking radio, later this year," said Jim Birrell.

BAE Systems also manufactures the AN/VRC-99A programmable wideband secure open architecture communications system.

"There are a number of other leading edge communications initiatives, including work that is being done on our Tactical Common Data Link (TCDL) system that place BAE Systems at the front of the pack in the ever evolving challenges of wideband communi cations in the battlefield.

"We will be employing all of this experience in our bid to win the major defence communications programs with a view to becoming Australia's leading provider of product and system solutions for Communications, Command, Control and Intelligence support," he said.
