MBDA wins Malaysian air defence contract

London, 10 April 2002

The Government of Malaysia has signed a contract with MBDA to procure the JERNAS Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) system.

The Malaysian Ministry of Defence confirmed today at the Defence Services Asia 2002 Show that MBDA's JERNAS will be introduced into service with the Royal Malaysian Army to form a new air defence regiment.

JERNAS is the only land-based area air defence system in the world which has been designed to defeat the most severe threats, including cruise missiles and smart munitions, in extreme electronic warfare and weather environments.

UK Government Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Bach said: “I am delighted that the Malaysian Government has decided to buy the Jernas system. We share their belief that it is the most effective area air defence system in the world, providing essential protection against an ever more complex threat ”.

He added: “This programme benefits both nations, and the UK is committed to a long term partnership with Malaysia. In particular we will be sharing our experience and operational knowledge throughout the service life of the JERNAS system. This will include opportunities for Malaysian service personnel to undergo training in the UK with the British Armed Forces”.

The new air defence regiment will be equipped with a full capability including Jernas missile launchers, surveillance radars, tracking radars, missiles and a comprehensive training and support package.

The procurement involves a significant and innovative technology transfer programme, which will include the design and manufacture of key Jernas sub-systems in Malaysia.

Fabrice Brégier, MBDA Chief Executive Officer, said: “This announcement reinforces the global presence of MBDA as the leading provider of air defence solutions”.

Alan Garwood, MBDA Chief Operating Officer, added : “This procurement further underpins the partnership formed with the Malaysian Government by MBDA and BAE SYSTEMS“.
