Lockheed Martin Receives Contract to Develop MRAAS Smart Munition Family for Future Combat System
ORLANDO, FL, April 4th, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control was recently awarded a $2.9 million contract for Phase I of the Future Combat System (FCS) Multi-Role Armament and Ammunition System (MRAAS). This award is the first increment of a contract worth approximately $6 million. Lockheed Martin is partnered with ATK Ammunition Systems and Draper Laboratory as one of two teams downselected to develop and initially test MRAAS as part of a two phased Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) program.
MRAAS is designed to provide full spectrum lethality from a single lightweight gun. The system will equip the Army's next generation FCS and will also play a key role in other Army legacy programs. Lockheed Martin's MRAAS munition suite features three rounds: an anti-armor projectile, a guided extended range projectile and a guided medium range projectile.
The next generation ammunition system will join a lineage of Lockheed Martin smart munitions and missile programs including Copperhead, Deadeye, Hellfire, LOCAAS, Longbow, Javelin, Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) and Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser (WCMD).
ATK Ammunition Systems, Arden Hills, Minn., develops and produces conventional munitions and precision-guided munitions. The company is an operating unit within the Defense Group of Edina, Minn.-based ATK (Alliant Techsystems), a $2 billion aerospace and defense contractor with leading positions in propulsion, composite structures, munitions, and precision capabilities.
Draper Laboratory is an independent laboratory for applied research, engineering development, education and technology transfer based in Cambridge, Mass.
