Pratt-led team wins Collier Trophy

February 25, 2002 -- The National Aeronautic Association on Monday selected a Pratt & Whitney-led team to win its Robert J. Collier Trophy, honoring the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's integrated lift fan propulsion system as "the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America."

Pratt President Louis Chênevert nominated the integrated lift fan propulsion system for the award. Joining Pratt on the winning team were Rolls-Royce, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems, as well as the JSF Program Office.

"The integrated lift fan propulsion system was up against some tough competition for this award, and it gives me great pride to know that our team has been so honored by our industry," said Chênevert. "The commitment and sheer talent that it took to make the JSF program such a success was indeed extraordinary. I am very proud of the great people we have here at Pratt & Whitney.

"This achievement would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of the Joint Program Office to establish the requirement for one fighter that met the needs of the Air Force, Navy and Marines," said Chênevert. "Their support was instrumental as we and the industry team developed this breakthrough technology."

This is the second time Pratt & Whitney has won the Collier Trophy as the lead company since the award was started in 1911. Pratt received the award in 1952 for the design, development and production of the J57 engine. The company was named as a team member for several other Collier Trophy wins: in 1970 for the Boeing 747, in 1975 for the Lockheed Martin F-16, in 1994 for the C-17 from McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing) and in 1995 for the Boeing 777.

The Collier Trophy is regarded worldwide as the most prestigious award in the aerospace industry. The trophy is given "for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America, with respect to improving the performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles, the value of which has been thoroughly demonstrated by actual use during the preceding year."

The trophy will be presented to Pratt and the rest of the winning team on May 29.
