EADS: Million-Euro Orders for New Radar Systems

Ulm, 20 February 2002

* Novel air surveillance network for Lithuania
* Advanced radar systems for Finland's Navy

EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company will develop the new air surveillance network for Lithuania. As reported by the company on Wednesday, the EADS Business Unit Systems & Defence Electronics has received orders worth approx. 30 million euros for its 3D radars. The contract for the set-up of the new mobile air surveillance system has been placed by the Defence Ministry of the Republic of Lithuania. This advanced system will mainly consist mobile 3D radar equipment and the evaluation and networking software.

Navy radars of the same product family have been ordered by the Finnish naval forces. These radars will be installed on board the Hamina-Class vessels and form part of the "Squadron 2000 Programme" of the Finnish Navy.

"To EADS, these orders signify an extension of our market segment of air defence and radars into the Baltic-Finnish region", said Dr. Stefan Zoller, head of the EADS Business Unit Systems & Defence Electronics. He further added that this contract was the largest national, military procurement order since the existence of the Republic.

The new air surveillance network will consist of three all-terrain four-axle transport vehicles which are equipped with their own power supply system, an air-conditioned working cab, a telescoping mast and the 3D radar (type TRML-3 D/32). Data collection of the individual systems and data coupling to an overall surveillance room will be carried out by means of the evaluation and networking software.

The 3D radar systems are powerful three-dimensional acquisition radars for ground-based (TRML-3 D) and naval (TRS-3 D) applications. They are particularly designed for the detection of missiles and other air vehicles. The radars can be used as stand-alone systems and within an integrated air defence network in conjunction with other systems.

With annual revenues of € 38,2 billion in 2001 and more than 100,000 employees, EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is the largest European aerospace company and world-wide Number 2. EADS is involved in the fields of civil aviation, helicopters, space technology, military transport and combat aircraft, as well as defence technology and services. Furthermore, EADS holds an 80 per cent stake in Airbus, 75 per cent in the space company Astrium, 100 per cent in the helicopter producer Eurocopter, 43 per cent in the Eurofighter programme and 37.5 per cent in the missile producer MBDA.
