BAE SYSTEMS Type 45 prime contract office awards new contract to Rolls-Royce

31 Jan 2002

BAE Systems Type 45 Prime Contract Office has selected Rolls-Royce Power Systems, Marine Division as the supplier of the Steering Gear, Fin Stabiliser and Propeller Shaftline systems for the Type 45 Anti Air Warfare Destroyer following a competitive process.

The selection of a bolted propeller for the ship with blades which can be replaced underwater without dry docking allowing reduced maintenance costs is a further example of the way in which cost through life is an integral part of every contract awarded for the Type 45.

This latest contract extends the close working relationship BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce have on the Type 45 Destroyer programme, as Rolls-Royce has already been selected as the supplier of the engine - the WR-21 Gas Turbine - for the first six Type 45s.

Type 45 Managing Director Brian Phillipson said: "This is the latest in a series of equipment contracts we have signed on the Type 45 programme in the last few weeks. Following an intense period of tendering and supplier selection in recent months, the order placement rate has accelerated and we have made more than 20 sub-contract awards in the last few weeks, with the remainder following this Spring."

"We are working very closely with our supplier community to develop the best and most affordable solution for the Royal Navy. In addition to BAE Systems employees, the Prime Contract Office team, in Filton and in Glasgow, includes colleagues from the Royal Navy, Defence Procurement Agency and the Defence Logistics Organisation, as well as specialists from BAE Systems Marine, Vosper Thornycroft, Rolls-Royce and other suppliers."

Other recent contract awards include:

* Vosper Thornycroft Controls Ltd - for much of the Electrical Distribution System.
* York International of Basildon for the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) and Chilled Water Plants
* Ultra Electronics for the Sonar system
* Facet Industrial (UK) Ltd for the AVCAT Monitor and AVCAT Filter Water Separator
* Hamworthy KSE Ltd for the Sewage Treatment Plants
* Rycroft Ltd for the Domestic Fresh Water Modules
