BAE SYSTEMS strengthens market position in military vehicle intercoms

17 Jan 2002

BAE Systems has achieved further successes in the programme to develop the ROVIS vehicle intercom as the system of choice throughout the world for the operationally demanding crew communications requirement.

The Land Platform Communications business of the Communications & Defence Infrastructure Division is now supplying the highly regarded digital ROVIS system to the Irish Army for incorporation into their new Mowag Piranha III armoured personnel carriers.

This represents two breakthroughs for the BAE Systems Blackburn, Lancashire, unit: firstly, adding a further customer to an already extensive installed user base and, secondly, reflecting the first installation of ROVIS equipments into the Piranha III vehicle.

This contract also witnesses the first success of a partnership created with Peltor AB of Sweden, a world-class supplier of audio headsets. BAE Systems and Peltor have entered into an agreement whereby the latter's headsets will be offered within ROVIS packages for new and existing customers seeking the benefits that Peltor's state-of-the-art headsets can offer to dismounted infantry in terms of hearing protection and quality of service.

ROVIS is a major advance in digital intercommunications and is the world's most widely fielded multi-station vehicle intercom system. It supports voice and data communications within military vehicles, even in extreme noise conditions.

Its comprehensive features include the capability to distribute digital data, voice-operated switching for hands-free operation, a ring architecture for resilience to battle damage, active noise reduction and built-in test facilities. It features a universal radio interface to a wide range of military radios, from the VRC12 series to modern frequency hopping radios such as SINCGARS and PR4G.
Background note:

The Communications & Defence Infrastructure (CDI) division of BAE Systems Avionics supplies tactical and strategic communications systems for all three domains, together with innovative information infrastructure and IFF systems, to support battlespace digitization. The division develops defence applications based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) sub-systems and accepts development risk from customer organisations.

CDI's approach features the creation of Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) with procurement specialists and user representatives, and the development of industrial alliances with other major industry centres of specialist expertise in associated fields.
