Lockheed Martin Leverages Systems Integration Expertise in Providing Total Ship Automation System Solution

Media briefing scheduled during Surface Navy Association trade show this week

BALTIMORE, MD, January 15th, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin Systems Integration companies and select commercial companies are aligning their talents and expertise to offer the Total Ship Automation System (TSAS). TSAS integrates state-of-the-art ship automation and control products, technologies, and services for naval and commercial maritime customers worldwide. TSAS is an elegant yet affordable solution that dramatically decreases manning levels, operating costs and life cycle costs for new or refitted ships. TSAS is based on a modular, open-system architecture with component-based software to create an integrated network of advanced automated solutions developed by Lockheed Martin and third party technology vendors.

TSAS allows distributed monitoring and control of critical ship systems and subsystems. This makes it possible to improve the vessel's operating efficiency with reduced crew.

One of the key technologies throughout TSAS is Lockheed Martin's Total Control (t-Ctrl') and Component Level Intelligent Distributed Control System (CLIDCS). The principal benefit of CLIDCS is that it provides constant access to all ship system conditions, available anywhere and anytime aboard the ship.

Another integral component of TSAS is a Networked Computer Processing and Display System (NCPDS), which is hardware-independent, easily modified and updated, featuring commercial flat panel high-resolution displays. For military applications, NCPDS may be coupled with the cutting-edge and battle-tested Lockheed Martin AN/UYQ-70 Advanced Display System.

The most dynamic and visible part of TSAS is the Lockheed Martin developed SmartBridge'. It includes a certified Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System (ECDIS) that can in real-time overlay displays of radar, electro-optical (E-O) and other sensor data for network distribution and navigation charts. SmartBridge' is complete with automated decision aids and provides real-time information to help those in command make accurate, timely decisions. A sample ECDIS system is on display in the Lockheed Martin booth at the Surface Navy Association and Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association trade shows the week of January 14, 2002.

Lockheed Martin is a world leader in the naval Machinery Control System (MCS), with over 29 years of experience designing and producing systems for the U.S. Navy. With shipsets found aboard 18 different ship classes, installed by 15 different shipbuilders for nine navies worldwide, MCS is a major technology discriminator for Lockheed Martin.

TSAS is backed up by Lockheed Martin's Lifetime Support Capability, consisting of full-service logistics, long distance support, automatic diagnostics and reconfiguration, and technology refresh.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global enterprise principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced-technology systems, products and services. The company's core businesses are systems integration, space, aeronautics and technology services.
