Lockheed Martin Conducts Second Successful Guided MLRS Test

DALLAS, TX, January 9th, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control successfully conducted an engineering development flight test (EDT-2) of the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) today at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. EDT-2 marks the second consecutive successful test of GMLRS. The rocket was launched from an MLRS M270 Improved Position Determining System (IPDS) launcher. Major test objectives included demonstrating the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and verifying navigation performance and warhead effectiveness. During the flight, the rocket traveled more than 60 km to the impact area, marking the longest distance tested to date.

The Guided MLRS rocket program is an international cooperative between the U.S., U.K., Italy, France and Germany.

The Guided MLRS rocket incorporates global positioning system (GPS)-aided inertial guidance package integrated on a product-improved rocket body. Additionally, small canards on the Guided rocket nose will provide basic maneuverability and enhance the accuracy of the system. Guided MLRS initial operational capability is scheduled for FY' 05.

Guided MLRS is the next major step in the evolution of the MLRS Family of Munitions, offering advanced capabilities, reduced logistics support and precision attack. The rocket will have a range of approximately 60 kilometers.
