Lockheed Martin Training Modifies Miles XXI for U.S. Army Interim Armored Vehicle
Brigade Combat Team's new vehicle to be fitted with laser-based training simulation equipment
ORLANDO, FL, January 3rd, 2002 -- Lockheed Martin Training, recently received the first task order to produce and field Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement Systems (MILES XXI) laser-based training systems for the U.S. Army's new Interim Armored Vehicle (IAV). Lockheed Martin will supply the U.S. Army with MILES XXI equipment adapted for the new Brigade Combat Team Interim Armored Vehicles under a $4.2 million contract award. This award represents the first Lot Production Option of many planned over the next six years by the U.S. Army's Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Command (STRICOM). Deliveries from Lockheed Martin Information Systems in Orlando are scheduled to begin in June 2002.
"This award represents our customer's confidence in our ability to fulfill the program requirement to field MILES XXI equipment as rapidly as possible," said Lockheed Martin Information Systems President John Hallal. "Our MILES XXI modular design has proven to be easily adaptable to meet all current and future vehicle platforms, enabling this production award to be completed in time to support the Army's fielding schedule for the IAV."
MILES XXI is a family of infantry, vehicle, anti-tank and independent target systems laser-based tactical engagement simulators that furnish real-time feedback on the result of weapon engagements. Lockheed Martin Information Systems received the MILES XXI Low Rate Initial Production contract award in May 2001.
Enhanced features of MILES XXI include smaller components, longer battery life, lower production costs, and reduced system maintenance from previous versions of MILES equipment. The advanced devices are interoperable with previous configurations of MILES and are upgradeable for instrumented use at Combat Training Centers and with precision-gunnery configurations.
Work on this production lot option for the MILES XXI laser training system will take place in Orlando, at facilities of Lockheed Martin Information Systems and teammate Schwartz Electro-Optics, and at Lockheed Martin's facility in La Mesa, Mexico.
