BAE SYSTEMS to demonstrate fast jet directed infrared countermeasures technology

BAE Systems has been selected by the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence to conduct a technology demonstration program for U.K.'s Fast Jet Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) Laser System. Under a two year, $5.6 million contract, BAE Systems Information & Electronic Warfare Systems (IEWS), headquartered in Nashua, New Hampshire, will develop a robust, miniaturised, laser-capable Acquisition, Pointing and Tracking System.
BAE Systems new DARTTM -- short for Defensive Avionics Receiver Transmitter - System will show its ability to provide "stabilised and precise threat tracking, as well as a high-power laser jamming capability" to defeat advanced infrared missile threats, according to Robert Delaney, DART System Program Manager.
Delaney explained that the DART System, "being integrated with a laser and missile warning system, will provide 'fast jets' -- primarily tactical fighter aircraft -- with an advanced countermeasure capability against hostile surface and air launched infrared missiles." These missiles are among the most deadly threats to aircraft and aircrews over hostile territory.
BAE Systems will lead an international team to integrate and transition the DART System's enabling technologies to a fully development-ready status, including a demonstration of compatibility with multiple laser subsystems. Laboratory and field trials over the next two years may lead to later flight trials.
This award is the result of a multi-year risk reduction activity by BAE Systems to integrate and demonstrate critical DART System enabling technologies to the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence and its Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. The DART System may also be expanded to incorporate additional electro-optical and infrared functions.
The work will be performed at BAE Systems Pomona, California, and Nashua, New Hampshire, facilities. The contracting Agency is the United Kingdom's Defence Procurement Agency. The United Kingdom's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory will closely monitor the development and lead the UK technical assessment.
