Lockheed Martin Delivers First New Production Lamps MKIII Helicopter For Spanish Navy Three Months Ahead Of Schedule
U.S. Government accepts aircraft for Spanish Navy during ceremony at Lockheed Martin Systems Integration - Owego
OWEGO, NY, December 5th, 2001 -- Lockheed Martin met a production challenge three months ahead of schedule by completing the systems integration of the first of six new production LAMPS MK III SH-60B armed helicopters for the Spanish Navy on November 30. TEMP_BODYRepresentatives of the U.S. government, Spain and subcontractors involved in the program were at the Lockheed Martin Systems Integration facility in Owego, N.Y., today as the inaugural aircraft was delivered. During the ceremony, David Matheny, the U.S. Navy program manager for Spain, accepted the new Light Airborne Multi-Purpose Systems (LAMPS) MK III SH-60B multimission helicopter for the Spanish Navy.
"This achievement marks another milestone in a long and productive relationship between the U.S. Navy and the Spanish Navy," Matheny said. "The superior operating capabilities of this aircraft will add a significant new dimension to the Spanish Navy's MK III Ship/Air Weapon Systems deployed aboard Spain's Santa Maria class-guided missile frigates."
"Lockheed Martin is equally proud to be the prime systems integrator contractor for this program and to have met the speed-to-market commitment our team made to deliver the first helicopter three months ahead of schedule," emphasized Peter Schultz, president of Integrated Systems for Lockheed Martin. "But it's important to note that we could not have achieved this milestone without a similar commitment of excellence from our partners, AMPER Programas, Sociedad Anonima Electronica Submarina (SAES), and Sikorsky Aircraft Company."
AMPER Programas, Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain, is fabricating the sensor operator consoles, mission racks and associated cable shipsets for the program's helicopters. SAES, located in Cartagena, Spain, is providing eight-channel acoustic signal processors based on ruggedized, off-the-shelf technology. Sikorsky, Stratford, Conn., manufactures the SH-60B helicopter.
Under the LAMPS MKIII program, Spain is upgrading six existing aircraft and receiving six new helicopters. The Spanish Navy will have 12 state-of-the-art maritime helicopters to deploy aboard its six F-81 Santa Maria-class guided missile frigates, and its new F-100 AEGIS Frigates, which are all LAMPS MK III-capable. Each fully integrated helicopter will remain in the United States until all six SH-60B armed helicopters are completed.
The contract, valued at $55.4 million, is managed by the U.S. Navy's Naval Air Systems Command through its Foreign Military Sale procurement provision.
