Experienced Lockheed Martin Team Wins Korean Mobile Radar Contract
SYRACUSE, NY, November 27th, 2001 -- Lockheed Martin, which has extensive experience in providing ground-based surveillance radars to the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF), today announced that it has won a contract to provide three mobile radar systems. The TPS-117 transportable radar systems - along with integrated air operations, communications and logistics support - will be delivered by the end of the first quarter of 2004. The Lockheed Martin radar was selected over the Northrop Grumman TPS-70SS. In December 2000, the ROKAF purchased four FPS-117 fixed-site radars to supplement the existing eight systems that the ROKAF uses for air surveillance. Factory acceptance testing for the first of four radars was completed in October and installation will begin early next year. Eight other FPS-117 radars have been providing the primary air surveillance for Korea for over a decade.
"This contract award by the ROKAF to provide three mobile radar systems is a reflection on how well we have performed to requirements set for our earlier work in Korea," said Vice President for Radar/Sensor Systems Richard Schubert. "We are very pleased that the ROKAF continues to appreciate the features and reliability offered by our proven line of solid state radars."
The TPS-117 has been selected in each of the last six international competitions for transportable 3D radars and 18 systems are currently in production or on order for programs in Brazil, Australia and Estonia, among others. Lockheed Martin will produce the mobile radar systems for Korea at its facility in Syracuse, N.Y., and Korean defense industry leader, LG Innotek, Ltd. (LGIT) will be responsible for major electronic components and subsystems.
TPS-117 L-band, tactical radars provide continuous high-quality 3-D coverage data on aircraft targets out to 250 nautical miles. The ROKAF also will use TPS-117s to carry out en route surveillance of commercial air traffic within Korean air space. The TPS-117 shares over 90 percent component commonality with its larger cousin, the FPS-117, which is one of the world's most successful radar designs. Currently deployed in more than 100 locations worldwide, the FPS-117 radar is known for its very high reliability and proven ability to operate unmanned in remote areas.
Designed for transportability and frequent redeployment, the TPS-117 radar antenna stows into a compact International Standards Organization (ISO) package in just minutes. A six-person team can set up and begin operating the antenna from its transport configuration in 30 minutes. The antenna and electronics shelter can be transported by truck, helicopter or C-130 aircraft.
A leader in the design, development and integration of radar systems, vessel traffic management, simulation and training systems, and other complex electronic systems, Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Radar Systems serves customers including all branches of the U.S. armed forces, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Transportation and State, and defense and transportation departments of countries on six continents. NE&SS-Radar Systems employs approximately 2,200 people at its Syracuse, N.Y., headquarters and is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation.
