New ship contract signed for the Clyde

19 Nov 2001

BAE Systems is pleased to announce the signing of a contract for the construction of two Alternative Landing Ships Logistic (ALSL) for the Ministry of Defence. The ships will be built at the BAE Systems Marine yard in Govan.

The initial steel-cutting is scheduled to begin before the end of 2001 with the first of the 16,000-ton ships scheduled to launch from the Glasgow yard towards the end of 2003.

It is expected that, at the peak of the workload, the ALSL programme will sustain some 600 jobs on the Clyde. This figure has already been incorporated in the restructuring announcement made in July following the awarding of the Type 45 Destroyer contract.

The ships will provide logistical support to the Royal Navy's amphibious assault ships and will be operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. They will join two similar ships under construction by Swan Hunter.

Simon Kirby, BAE Systems Marine Managing Director, said, "We are delighted to have successfully reached agreement on the build of these ships and hope to begin cutting steel shortly. BAE Systems remains firmly committed to shipbuilding on the Clyde and the ALSL contract is vital to that strategy.

"BAE Systems is working closely with our customer, the Defence Procurement Agency, and in an ongoing partnership with Swan Hunter. BAE Systems is committed to ensuring that we can supply these ships as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. We look forward to beginning construction and to delivering these ships on time and on budget."

Notes to Editors:
This contract follows the Government's announcement of its intention to procure four ALSL vessels (Two from BAE Systems, Two from Swan Hunter), made in October 2000.
