Thales establishes Airborne Systems Capability in Canada

13 November 2001

Thales announced today, in Ottawa, the official opening of its newest business unit: Thales Airborne Systems Canada (TASCA), a Maritime Patrol Mission Systems Integration business. Jose Massol, Thales Senior Vice President, Airborne Systems, declared: "Thales Airborne Systems Canada now exists and over the next three years, I know it will prosper and grow to become a major player in the global Maritime Patrol Mission Systems integration business".

Thales Airborne Systems will be engaged in the integration and installation of sensors and data management systems in aircraft for Maritime Patrol missions. The newest integrating system is Amascos, whose technology is state-of-the-art in Maritime Patrol data management systems. It has been ordered this year in Japan and Indonesia and is the basis of the Thales offering to the Canadian Aurora and Maritime Helicopter programs.

The transfer of technology and people to Canada has begun. Thales expects to have a dedicated Canadian team of 100 people supplying Maritime Patrol Mission Systems to Canada and the world within three years. Canadian engineers have been working in France since June, and five systems experts from Thales Airborne Systems units in France and the UK will soon be added to the 65 mission systems integration people currently at Thales Systems Canada thus, providing a base in Canada of 70 to start with.

"Thales has been present in Canada for over 20 years. We have been rewarded by our investments and our perseverance", said Norm Smyth, Chairman of Thales Defence business in Canada. "Canada has the expertise, opportunities, people and infrastructure which supports high technology business. From Canada we can contribute to the world market approach of Thales."

Thales in Canada has a total of 265 employees and sales of $200 million Canadian. Thales Airborne Systems is Europe's leading supplier of Airborne Systems. It has a staff of 6,800, sales of $1.6 billion Canadian, and operations in three countries: France, UK, and now Canada.
