New information technologies supporting air defence systems

29 October 2001

The French defence procurement agency DGA and Thales Air Defence roll out the first e-services application supporting air defence systems.

In September 2000, Thales Air Defence Customer Services began development of an application designed for the Ixarm.com portal at DGA, the French defence procurement agency.

The application, called Service Pilot 2001, is the first interactive tool capable of managing maintenance operations on the Crotale weapon system in service with the French Air Force.

SP 2001's extranet technology and intuitive user interface make it easier to manage and keep track of repair work undertaken by Thales. For example, the contractor and customer can both view work status at any time.

SP 2001 users thus have access to a protected workspace for operational and commercial exchanges.

This project is the result of close cooperation between teams at the Ixarm.com portal and at DGA's Tactical Missile Programmes Department (DGA/SPMT), the French Air Force's Central Equipment Division (overseeing the project) and Thales Air Defence.

Also in partnership with DGA and the French Air Force, Thales Air Defence is giving high priority to extending SP2001 to other air defence support contracts and to broadening its range of services.

"SP2001 will be added to the "Partners" space on Ixarm.com, early in 2002. It is a precursor for the portal services that contractors, DGA and armed forces will be able to share, and for the new relationships within the defence procurement community that such services imply," explains Bertrand Jourlin, who is leading the weapons procurement portal project at DGA.

"This new service reaffirms our commitment to continue doing more to improve customer satisfaction. It illustrates the close partnership between our teams and those at DGA and the French Air Force. Our customers' requirements have led us to implement a process of continual improvement and innovation of our service offering, and towards greater visibility and responsiveness with a view to optimizing systems and costs," says Roger Daix, Director of Customer Services at Thales Air Defence.

Thales Air Defence designs and delivers end-to-end equipment and systems to guarantee airspace security in times of peace, and in crisis and war situations. Its military systems span detection, identification and air operations command-and-control systems, and control of medium- and short-range weapon systems for battlefield protection and defence of sensitive sites.
