BAE SYSTEMS proud to be part of the joint Strike Fighter team

26 Oct 2001

BAE Systems is proud to be part of the Lockheed Martin team, which has just been chosen to go forward in the Joint Strike Fighter program. The team will now participate in the next phase of the program, System Development and Demonstration (SDD), to develop this next generation of strike aircraft. Twenty-two aircraft will be produced as part of SDD. BAE Systems has worked closely with the Lockheed Martin team for the past five years throughout the Concept Demonstrator Phase of the program.

Current requirements of the US Air Force, US Navy, US Marine Corps, and the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force would result in the manufacture of around 3,000 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft in three variants. Subsequently, there is the potential of around 2,000 aircraft for various countries in the world that currently have in service the legacy aircraft the JSF is intended to replace: the A-10, Harrier, F-16, and F/A-18.

"We are pleased that the Joint Strike Fighter program has chosen the Lockheed Martin team, and its aircraft, for this very important program," said John Weston, Chief Executive, BAE Systems. "The significance of this program for UK armed forces is that the combination of Eurofighter and JSF enables the UK to field 21st century capabilities in its defense and the defense of its allies."

"Industrially, BAE Systems is now intimately involved in the major 21st century tactical military aircraft programs on both sides of the Atlantic: F-22, Eurofighter, Gripen, JSF and F/A-18. This involvement will ensure thousands of jobs throughout the UK and US, now and in the future, as these aircraft are developed, produced and then supported and modified through their life cycles. This really confirms our position as the global solutions provider in airframes and systems for tactical aircraft."
