Lockheed Martin Radar Receives New Designation
SYRACUSE, NY, October 15th, 2001 -- Lockheed Martin announced that the designation of its TPS-117 long-range surveillance radar has been officially changed to the AN/TPS-77 - a U.S. government nomenclature. The change was made because Lockheed Martin has received an order for two of the systems under a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, which will be managed by the U.S. Air Force. "This has been a great year for the TPS-117, now the AN/TPS-77. Its new designation means this radar has the full support of the U.S. Air Force, just like the AN/FPS-117, and both radars are strong contenders in several international competitions," said Dick Schubert, vice president, radar/sensor systems. "We are delighted that nations as diverse as Estonia, Brazil and Australia have chosen this radar for their transportable air surveillance radar needs."
In March 2001, Estonia selected a TPS-117, over several international competitors, as a key element in the expansion of the capabilities of the BALTNET surveillance network. This joint air surveillance network monitors the airspace over and around the countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Six more of the Lockheed Martin systems are currently being delivered to Brazil for the System for the Vigilance of the Amazon (SIVAM) system and another four are being delivered to Australia.
The AN/TPS-77 is the latest configuration of the world's most successful 3D, solid-state radar design. This L-band, tactical transportable radar provides continuous high-quality 3-D coverage data on aircraft targets out to 250 nautical miles and shares about 80 percent component commonality with the AN/FPS-117 air surveillance radar. Certified by both the USAF and NATO, there are 94 systems operational in 14 countries. Many AN/FPS-117s have operated for years completely unmanned in remote areas.
A leader in the design, development and integration of radar systems, vessel traffic management, simulation and training systems, and other complex electronic systems, Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (NE&SS)-Radar Systems serves customers including all branches of the U.S. armed forces, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Transportation and State, and defense and transportation departments of countries on six continents. NE&SS-Radar Systems employs more than 2,000 people at its Syracuse, N.Y., headquarters and is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation.
