Lockheed Martin Delivers First "Hawkeye" Target Sight System To Bell Helicopter Textron

3RD Generation System To Be Tested On AH-1Z Cobra

ORLANDO, FL, August 16th, 2001 -- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control delivered its first Hawkeye eXtended Range (XR) Target Sight System (TSS) to Bell Helicopter, a Textron company. during a brief ceremony in Orlando Aug. 15. It is the first piece of hardware delivered by Missiles and Fire Control in Orlando that incorporates 3rd generation technology in a targeting system. The Hawkeye TSS will be installed on an AH-1Z Cobra helicopter in early 2002.

"This delivery culminates an ambitious design and development schedule under a highly successful Integrated Product Team," said Chris Becker, director of H-1 Programs for Bell Helicopter. "The Lockheed Martin team has continually met or exceeded the demands of this aggressive program."

"This is quite an achievement for the Hawkeye program and for Lockheed Martin," said Michael T. Donovan, Lockheed Martin vice president of Fire Control and Sensors. "This is the first step in implementing our Horizontal Technology Initiative (HTI). Many of the key elements of Hawkeye were developed for our advanced products like Sniper XR and the Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) for our Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. The key elements are also being used in upgrade initiatives to established products such as LANTIRN and NITE Hawk."

According to Richard Benton, Hawkeye's technical director, the Hawkeye TSS is a fire control system that will be the benchmark to which other systems are measured.

The Hawkeye TSS is a suite of high-performance electro-optical/infrared sensors packaged in a highly stabilized turret to provide day/night surveillance and targeting for the AH-1Z Cobra helicopter. It features a large-aperture, third-generation staring mid-wave FLIR; a color TV with continuous zoom to high magnification; a laser designator/rangefinder with an eyesafe mode; a laser spot tracker; and an on-gimbal inertial measurement unit for accurate line-of-sight pointing and geo-location of targets.

Located in Orlando, Fla., and Dallas, Texas, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (NYSE:LMT), a world leader in electro-optics, smart munitions, advanced combat, missile, rocket and space systems, is an operating element of Lockheed Martin Systems Integration business unit based in Bethesda, Md.
