Pratt & Whitney, Italian Companies Sign LOIs for Military Engine Work

EAST HARTFORD, CONN., AUGUST 3, 2001 -- Letters of Intent (LOIs) between Pratt & Whitney (P&W) and a number of aerospace and manufacturing companies from Italy have been signed recently, signifying the companies’ agreement to work together in anticipation of supporting various military engine programs.

Italian companies that have signed LOIs with P&W include AEREA in Milano, Secondo Mona in Somma Lombardo, ASE in San Giorgio su Legnano, and Sistema Compositi in Colleferro Stazione. The LOIs cover work ranging from the building and machining of parts, to manufacturing and packaging composite containers.

New opportunities for international engine sales have initiated these recent activities, according to Jason Chamberlain, Director of Airlift, Surveillance and Tanker programs, P&W. "In order to be successful in Europe, we must expand our presence and form long-term relationships with quality suppliers in Europe and specifically in Italy," he said. "For example, we are competing to supply PW4060 engines for the Italian Air Force’s new Boeing 767 tanker aircraft, and plan to team with Alitalia to offer in-country logistics support, should our engine be selected for that application."

"Pratt & Whitney currently relies on a number of respected Italian companies to provide critical components on several of our high-profile engines," said Walter Bylciw, Executive Vice President of P&W’s military engines division. "Fiat Avio is the gearbox supplier for our F119 engine powering the F/A-22 Raptor, and is also a risk and revenue sharing partner with us on our commercial PW2000 and PW4000 engines. Microtecnica, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, supplies controls and subsystems on a number of engines. In addition, we are in discussions with Piaggio on various opportunities. We look forward to expanding our relationship with Italian industry, so that together we can provide high quality products at competitive prices to our customers worldwide."

Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies company (NYSE:UTX), is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.
