- Boeing Begins $60 Million Upgrade of Saudi Arabia's AWACS Fleet Boeing 22 Aug 2001 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has begun installing new mission computers and other hardware and software on the Royal Saudi Air Force's (RSAF) fleet of five AWACS aircraft, as part of a contract worth approximately $60 million.
- Thales secures a major optronics contract from the UK Ministry of Defence Thales 22 Aug 2001 -- Adam Ingram MP, Minister of State for the Armed Forces, today announced that Thales Optronics Limited, has won a UK MOD order of approximately #230 million (360 million euros), for vehicle optronics systems on the Battle Group Thermal Imaging (BGTI) programme.

- F-B-I / COLE INVESTIGATION VOA 22 Aug 2001 -- It's been almost a year since a terrorist bomb nearly sank the U-S destroyer "Cole" while the Navy ship was on a refueling stop in Yemen. Seventeen American sailors were killed. The threat of more terrorism forced the F-B-I to temporarily pull its agents off a case.
