Lockheed-Martin enhances Thomson team in future UK Aircraft carrier study
18 June 2001
Lockheed-Martin has joined the Thomson team, one of the two contenders awarded a 1999-study contract for the Assessment Phase of the Royal Navy's Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF) programme. The original Thomson teaming, announced last November, is composed of Thomson-CSF as prime contractor, Raytheon and BMT Defence Services Ltd.. The arrival of Lockheed-Martin with its extensive experience in the prime contract management, system integration, software development and defence electronics considerably enhances the teaming.
CVF is one of the flagship programmes under the United Kingdom's SMART procurement initiative, which aims to deliver equipment faster, cheaper and better. The two new carriers are part of the modern force structure that emerged from the UK Strategic Defence Review and will replace the Invincible-class carriers that are currently in service.
Lockheed-Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (NE&SS) offers long experience in program management and the design, integration and production of Naval Combat Systems including ship aircraft interfaces, and aviation management. Recently Lockheed-Martin was selected as the warfare system integrator for the US CVN-77 aircraft carrier program. The Company is also the prime contractor for the AEGIS Weapon System, and the UK EH-101 Merlin helicopter programs, and is currently in competition for the Joint Strike Fighter.
Thomson-CSF is one of the leading companies in the naval sector and represents a major European defence contractor. The addition of Racal -subject to regulatory approval - will give the Company a particularly powerful position in the UK - Europe's largest defence market - where it will be a potential leading prime contractor for the British Ministry of Defence.
