Thomson-CSF and DCN plan joint venture

18 June 2001

Thomson-CSF and French naval shipbuilder DCN (Direction des Constructions Navales) plan to form a 50-50 joint venture to conduct naval programs, particularly in export markets. The new company will be more competitive internationally and a strong contender for leadership in world markets. It will focus French commercial efforts and improve France's capacity to act as prime contractor on warship and naval combat system programs.

The new company will leverage the respective strengths of DCN and build on the partners' successful record of cooperation in past and current programs.

As soon as it has been formally set up, the joint company will be responsible for the French industry contribution to the Franco-Italian Horizon frigate program.

Naval establishments and shipyards will remain the responsibility of DCN. This operation is part of a program of strategic alliances which DCN is implementing under its development plan.

Thomson-CSF will continue to develop and market naval equipment and systems for its customer base in Europe and worldwide. The plan to set up the new company is fully in line with Thomson-CSF's objectives in naval markets, where the Group intends to strengthen its prime contractorship and systems capabilities for naval programs worldwide. The French State and Thomson-CSF have decided to enter negotiations with a view to meeting these objectives.
