Thomson-CSF selected for UK submarine contract
18 June 2001
BAESYSTEMS has selected Thomson-CSF subsidiary Pilkington Optronics for a contract to supply the Visual Systems to be fitted in the new ASTUTE Class submarines being built at Barrow-in-Furness for the Royal Navy.
Tom O' Neill, chief executive of Pilkington Optronics, comments: "This contract confirms our long-held leadership in mast and periscope technology and enhances our credentials as the primary choice for navies worldwide. It also reinforces Thomson-CSF's position as a key supplier to UK prime contractors and the MoD."
The Visual System incorporates the Optronic Mast which is a revolutionary development in above-water sensors for submarines. Unlike conventional periscopes, which have a direct visual path to the outside world, the Optronic Mast does not penetrate the hull but instead uses an electronic link to present the surface picture on monitor screens as part of an integrated combat system. It has a thermal imaging sensor which allows day or night operation and incorporates a number of 'stealth' features including a "quick-look-round" facility which gives full horizon coverage in a few brief seconds.

Thomson-CSF employs more than 6,000 people in the UK and generates revenues in excess of #600 million.
On 13 January 2000 Thomson-CSF announced a recommended #1.3 billion offer for Racal Electronics plc. The acquisition is expected to be completed, subject to regulatory approvals, later this year.
