
Successful Maiden Flight For Turkish F-5 Upgraded By Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI)/LAHAV Division

The F-5 Avionics Modernization Program being performed by Israel Aircraft Industries' Lahav Division for the Turkish Air Force is on schedule.
Paris Air Show, June 2001 - The F-5 Avionics Modernization Program being performed by Israel Aircraft Industries' Lahav Division for the Turkish Air Force is on schedule. The latest milestone achievement took place in Turkey on April 17, 2001, when the first flight, of an F-5 prototype that was upgraded in Turkey, was successfully completed.
The $75 Million program to upgrade 48 Turkish Air Force F-5 Aircraft began two years ago. The program is managed by IAI/Lahav Division, which is leading a consortium comprising also Elbit Systems and Singapore Technologies Aerospace.
The modernization program consists of two major phases:
1. Structure life extension and reinforcement - Under the responsibility and executing of the Turkish Air Force.
2. Avionics systems upgrading including weapon release, navigation and displays - under IAI's responsibility and other consortium members.
Three additional prototypes will join the fleet to be test flown to fully demonstrate the systems performance, which were specified by the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
The upgraded F-5 Aircraft will serve the Turkish Air Force until 2020 as their intermediate Aircraft for training new pilots before they move up into F-16 aircraft.
