BAE SYSTEMS wins F-16 HUD camera contract
18 Jun 2001
BAE Systems has been awarded a contract worth 1.8 million, by Lockheed Martin of Fort Worth, Texas, to supply 200 advanced colour cockpit television systems (ACCTVS) for installation on F-16 aircraft.
The television system records everything the pilot sees through the Head Up Display (HUD) and the playback is used to debrief sorties. Development models of the system will be delivered in August 2001 and flight trials are due to be conducted before Christmas 2001. Production of the ACCTVS will begin in April 2002 with the final delivery in October 2005.
Project Manager at BAE Systems Avionics in Edinburgh, Brendan Cadogan, said “Winning this contract demonstrates that we can provide exactly what the customer is looking for at a competitive price. The new camera uses state of the art digital processing to give increased sensitivity with low noise and improved reliability. Lockheed Martin is currently utilising this camera for all new build F-16s. The F-16 is the largest single fleet in the world, so this contract could grow significantly if retrofit orders are secured”
New initiatives in design and manufacture mean that the ACCTVS has optimised performance at minimum cost, with low life cycle costs. The systems will be manufactured in BAE Systems’ new production facility in Edinburgh, due for official opening on July 3rd 2001.
