Naval communication systems
14 June 2001
The Thales naval communications systems offering for surface ships, shore stations, aircraft and submarines is based on a range of proven, fully qualified products including the HF 6000 series, HF modems, the Thomrad 6000 range of V/UHF systems, the VLF digital receiver and wireless communication systems.
The Group has numerous communications system references around the world with all types of naval platforms.
The offering hinges upon the FICS concept (Fully Integrated Communications System) for surface vessels, submarines and shore stations, which provides:
.centralised management of all platform communications,
.local user connectivity via secure high-speed LAN, and interconnection with external communications (radio, modems, satcom terminals).
This approach enhances flexibility and security for a full range of communications services including voice, intercom, conference calls, tactical data and database exchanges.
The FICS system has been chosen for the Royal Navy’s T45 class destroyers by the program prime contractor BAE Systems. The initial contract is for three destroyers. An additional nine are expected to be equipped later.
The company's short- and medium-term development priorities are:
- multimedia intranet for naval forces (HF, V/UHF, satcom, SHF) with services such as email, videoconferencing or planning & tasking,
- tactical datalinks (L11, L16, L22, etc.) based on recent or ongoing developments such as MIDS-LVT and DLIP (Data Link Interface Processor),
- high data rate and very high data rate radiocommunications and new waveforms to support future requirements.
