Thales wins competition for new data-encryption system on NATO's IP networks

14 June 2001

NATO has selected the Cryptel IP data encryption system developed by Thales Communications AS of Oslo, Norway, as the NATO standard IP (Internet Protocol) cryptographic equipment for data communications. An initial contract has been signed in Brussels between the NATO C3 Agency and Thales Communications AS.

The contract confirms the successful deployment of the Thales multi-domestic development strategy, through which the Group is consolidating a global network of operations that is close to its customers as well as achieving geographical diversity in its centers of excellence. The contract confirms the position of Thales Communications AS as the Group's centre of excellence for NATO-standard data security solutions.

The contract is also an illustration of the Thales Group's dual technology strategy, which leverages the complementary nature of its skills and technologies to meet the needs of both commercial and defence markets. Thales is ideally positioned to bring customers the benefits of growing convergence between commercial and military technologies, particularly in areas such as secure Internet and data encryption.

NATO and its member countries will start using Cryptel IP later this year. The new standard IP crypto system will protect data, video conferencing and voice over IP communications. It was developed in close cooperation with the Norwegian defence ministry and is already in use in the Norwegian armed forces' data networks.

Jens Gjerlow, Managing Director of Thales Communications AS, stated: "This contract is a major breakthrough for the Cryptel IP system and opens up significant export opportunities with NATO member countries."
