BAE SYSTEMS expands land platform communications portfolio

30 May 2001

Ref: 075/2001

The Land Platform Communications business of BAE Systems Avionics' Communications & Defence Infrastructure Division has made significant further steps in its programme to offer a full range of communications systems to support mobile ground-based rapid deployment operations.

Developments associated with the highly regarded ROVIS vehicle intercom system can now support both vehicle and dismounted applications such as local area systems, command villages, command vehicles, armoured fighting vehicles' crew communications and lightweight vehicle intercoms. New design breakthroughs enable seamless dismounted vehicle crew and soldier communications to be provided for requirements such as the United Kingdom's Future Infantry Soldier Technology (FIST) and US Land & Mounted Warrior programmes.

The creation of this balanced product range coincides with the move of the business to a new, purpose-built site, encompassing full design and production facilities, in Blackburn, Lancashire, United Kingdom.

Commenting on this development, BAE Systems' Steve Collier, says "ROVIS is the world leader in digital intercoms and is rapidly becoming the system of choice for demanding military users world-wide. These further technical developments are extending the system's capability into new user priority areas with a market value approaching $1 billion over the next five years. Our established partnership with Northrop Grumman in the USA - where ROVIS is type classified as the AN-VIC3 for service in the US Army - has proven mutually beneficial and continues to facilitate the introduction of new products into the US market."

Notes to Editors:

ROVIS represents a major advance in digital intercommunications and is the world's most widely fielded multi-station vehicle intercom system. It supports voice and data communications within military vehicles, even in extreme noise conditions.

Its comprehensive features include the capability to distribute digital data, voice-operated switching for hands-free operation, a ring architecture for resilience to battle damage, active noise reduction and built-in test facilities. It features a universal radio interface to a wide range of military radios, including the VRC12, SINCGARS, Jaguar, Panther, PR4G, SEM193 and Raven series.

The Communications & Defence Infrastructure (CDI) division of BAE Systems Avionics supplies tactical and strategic communications systems for all three domains, together with innovative information infrastructure and IFF systems, to support battlespace digitization. The division develops defence applications based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) sub-systems and accepts development risk from customer organisations. CDI's approach features the creation of Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) with procurement specialists and user representatives, and the development of industrial alliances with other major industry centres of specialist expertise in associated fields.
