ATK Awarded $5 Million Contract to Produce Artillery Fuze Setter

May 29, 2001

ATK (Alliant Techsystems)(NYSE: ATK) said it has been selected by the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center, (ARDEC), Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., to produce the Portable Inductive Artillery Fuze Setter (PIAFS) under an 18-month contract valued at approximately $5 million.

Work on the contract will be performed by ATK Precision Fuze Company, Janesville, Wis., a leading supplier of precision fuzes and proximity sensors to the U.S. and its allies.

PIAFS is a hand-held unit powered by commercial batteries that is used to program artillery fuzes manually or through an artillery fire control system. It was designed by ARDEC and subsequently manufactured for qualification testing by ATK Precision Fuze Company in 2000 under a development contract for the U.S. Army's Multi-Option Fuze for Artillery (MOFA).

"We are pleased that ARDEC has selected ATK to begin initial production of PIAFS, which will enable artillery gunners to set projectile fuzes faster and more accurately under the most adverse environmental conditions," said Blake Larson, president, ATK Precision Fuze Company. "As the U.S. Army's only portable artillery fuze setter, this important system will play a key supporting role in the U.S. Army's transformation to a more mobile and lethal fighting force."

"The fact that the U.S. Army has again turned to our own ATK for its precision fuze needs is a further testament to ATK's top-quality production," said U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, who represents Wisconsin's first Congressional district, in which ATK's Janesville plant is located. "The PIAFS contract is great news as it means good-paying jobs for ATK's Janesville workers. At the same time, they are contributing to our national security by offering crucial support to the Army."

ATK has been an industry partner to the U.S. Army and its soldiers for more than 60 years. Major ATK Army programs include small-caliber, medium-caliber, and large-caliber ammunition, the Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW), tactical barrier and munition systems, and tactical rocket systems.

ATK Precision Fuze Company is one of five operating units within ATK's Defense Group. The company's products are used in artillery, mortar, bomb, rocket, cannon, air-delivered, and special operations systems.

ATK is a $1.6 billion aerospace and defense company with leading positions in munitions, precision capabilities, propulsion and composite structures. The company, which is headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., employs approximately 10,000 people and has two business segments: Aerospace and Defense.
