ATK Awarded $1.2 Million Contract to Produce Component for Crotale NG Air Defense System
Apr 10, 2001
ATK (NYSE: ATK) (Alliant Techsystems), said it has been awarded a $1.2 million contract from Thales Air Defense (formerly Thomson-CSF/Airsys), Bagneux, France, to produce launch pod containers for the Crotale NG (Next Generation) air defense system. Deliveries under the contract will continue through April 2002.
The Crotale NG is an all-weather short-range air defense system effective against air threats such as fixed-wing aircraft, attack helicopters, cruise missiles, tactical missiles, and stand-off weapons released from aircraft and helicopters. The launch pod container serves as the mechanical and electrical interface between the weapon system and its hyper-velocity VT1 missile, which has an effective range of approximately 11 kilometers.
The Crotale NG system entered production in 1990 and is in service with the Finnish Army, the French Air Force, and the French Navy. The launch pod containers to be produced by ATK will be integrated into Crotale NG systems for a NATO ally, which ordered 11 systems in 1999 for use by its Air Force and Navy. The Crotale NG system also has been sold to the Oman Navy.
ATK Integrated Defense Company will produce the Crotale NG launch pod containers at its manufacturing facility in Clearwater, Fla.
Hubert D. Hopkins, president, ATK Integrated Defense Company, said the contract represents a new product for ATK and further expansion of the company's growing partnership with Thales.
"We are pleased to expand our business relationship with Thales Air Defense on the important Crotale NG weapon system, which is becoming widely recognized as one of the most sophisticated and effective air defense platforms in the world," said Hopkins.
ATK Integrated Defense Company is a leading developer and producer of integrated infantry weapon systems, tactical barrier systems, and electronic warfare systems. It is part of ATK's Defense group.
ATK is a $1.1 billion aerospace and defense company with leading positions in munitions, precision capabilities, propulsion and composite structures. The company, which is headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., employs approximately 6,000 people and has two business segments: Aerospace and Defense.
