General Dynamics Receives $23.4 Million Order on Common Hardware/Software-2 Contract
Flexible, versatile program makes commercial technology accessible to U.S. tactical computer users.
TAUNTON, Mass. – General Dynamics Communication Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), this week received a $23.4 million modification to its multiyear Common Hardware/Software-2 (CHS-2) contract. The U.S. Army Communications Electronics Command is the contracting authority.
Through the CHS-2 program, General Dynamics provides Army and Marine Corps tactical computer users with next-generation commercial and ruggedized workstations, plus associated hardware and software.
The modification, or order, received this week is the 44th received in the past 12 months; the cumulative value of those orders is more than $160 million. The total value of the contract since it was awarded in 1995 now stands at approximately $600 million.
Chris Marzilli, vice president of Commercial Hardware Systems for General Dynamics in Taunton, said, "The CHS-2 program has turned out to be an incredibly successful contract because we are able to continually add the latest proven commercial technologies. Military users get access to the same power and performance levels available to their commercial counterparts.
"The contract is also extremely versatile," Marzilli added. "For example, this order includes notebook computers for an intelligence program as well as ruggedized workstations and flat-panel displays to upgrade a tactical communications system. There aren’t too many contracts that let you answer both of those needs at the same time."
As the prime contractor, General Dynamics provides a complete hardware suite and associated software for full integration into major Army command and control systems. In addition, the company provides program management and user support with extensive testing and integration. CHS-2 uses commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) architectures as the foundation for ruggedizing tactical computing platforms in the Digitized Army.
General Dynamics Communication Systems is headquartered in Taunton, Mass. The unit provides secure communication and information solutions that integrate custom-developed and commercial off-the-shelf products for the military and commercial markets. It designs, integrates, and supports strategic and tactical battlefield communication systems, worldwide, and provides environmentally hardened and special packaging of computer equipment and peripherals for both commercial and military applications.
General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 46,000 people and anticipates 2001 sales of approximately $11.5 billion. The company has leading market positions in business aviation, information systems, shipbuilding and marine systems, and land and amphibious combat systems.
