A JOINT NEWS RELEASE FROM BAE SYSTEMS AND ALENIA MARCONI SYSTEMS

A powerful team of the UK’s leading combat system suppliers, BAE Systems Combat and Radar Systems (CaRS) and Alenia Marconi Systems (AMS) Integrated Systems Division has been awarded a contract by the Type 45 Prime Contract Office in the order of 50M to supply the Combat Management System for the first three of the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers. This new ship’s major role will be to supply the area air defence capability to British Forces for the future. The partnership for this project is known as Team 45.

The Combat Management System sits at the core of a modern warship’s combat system. It takes in all relevant external and internal information to enable the ship’s command to detect and counter threats to both the ship and surrounding forces. The Type 45 CMS will not only integrate the activities of the Royal Navy’s latest anti-air weapons system, PAAMS, but will also co-ordinate and control the activity of all the other sensors and weapons.

The Team 45 solution will be the most sophisticated naval CMS system afloat when the first ship enters service in 2007. The team’s key to success is the ability to retain the investment of the Royal Navy in its current combat management systems for the Type 23 and Type 42, integrating new applications and migrating it all onto the most modern systems architecture available. The CMS utilises the latest information management technologies and links the proven defence specific commercial off the shelf (C O T S) hardware and software. This will provide the Type 45 destroyer with an open system ideally suited to support the evolving capability that the ship will need throughout its in-service life.

Both CaRS and AMS are among the world’s leading exporters of Combat Management Systems. They have supplied systems to more than 20 countries world-wide, including recent deliveries to Korea and Malaysia. Between them the companies have supplied all of the CMS for the Royal Navy’s surface and submarine fleets and are continuously involved in maintaining the fleet's current capability alongside an ongoing programme of technological and capability enhancement. Team 45 brings together the best of this experience and has access to a wide range of expertise and products relevant to the Type 45 programme. The unified team organisation is delivering exceptional value for money through maximum software re-use, efficient new development and single team efficiency.
Note to Editors:

The Team 45 Combat Management System scope of supply comprises the Command System, Video Distribution System, Secondary Data Display, Command Support System and Tactical Datalink for the three Type 45s and the shore based development sites. Key features of the CMS elements include:
The Command System

* Based on the latest in COTS hardware and operating systems
* The CaRS Common Infrastructure product, which supplies the middleware isolation of applications from the underlying system, provides the high performance, resilient, distributed operating environment required to meet the demanding requirements of this key defence system
* The Common Infrastructure Middleware is being enhanced with an open Application Program Interface (API) facilitating development and re-use of applications in support of the Type 45 Incremental Acquisition Programme
* Pull through of proven in-service applications from the Type 23 Frigate (including tactical picture management, sensor and weapon control, navigation and planning functions) and Type 42 (including tactical datalinks, fighter control and planning functions)
* New applications for control of the Principal Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS), the Combat and Radar Systems Sampson Multifunction Radar and the Alenia Marconi Systems Long Range Radar
* The console is designed to host the displays from various systems providing a unified Combat System operator workstation

Video Distribution System

* Provision of Radar Video to each operator console using a new digital distribution system
* Provision of television video to each operator console

Secondary Data Display

* Using the latest in internet and browser technology the Secondary Data Display provides a ‘Combat System Intranet’ supplying ownship data, planning and status information to the Command System consoles and a number of other remote, interactive displays throughout the ship

Command Support System

* Team 45 is supplying a Command Support System, compatible with in-service systems, as part of the CMS allowing command planning activities to be undertaken

Tactical Datalink

* Team 45 is supplying a Datalink Processing System and associated link network control equipment to allow the Command System to link with UK and NATO datalinks
