Northrop Grumman Sector Modernizing AEW&EW Facilities
BETHPAGE, N.Y. - March 7, 2001 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) Integrated Systems Sector (ISS) has begun renovating two buildings here as part of a more than $15 million investment in Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare (AEW & EW) facilities in Bethpage. The modernization project is scheduled to be completed in July 2001.
An initial $5 million construction contract has been awarded to E.W. Howell Company Inc., Woodbury, N.Y., to renovate the buildings.
"Bethpage has been the historic home of a very important part of Northrop Grumman Corporation and it will continue to be the headquarters for this business area of the company," said Philip A. Teel, ISS vice president for AEW&EW Systems, which is headquartered in Bethpage. "However, the buildings were built for a world war, a cold war and a space race. This modernization investment reflects the needs of Northrop Grumman and the aerospace business in this new millennium. We're going to consolidate our people on the Bethpage campus into three main buildings that will be configured for the advanced systems integration, electronics and aeronautical work that we do today."
After the consolidation, the bulk of the Northrop Grumman employees in Bethpage will be housed in the two buildings being renovated and in Building 14, which is the William J. Schwendler Engineering Center. The company will also house a few employees in Building 1.
Together, these facilities will house about 1,700 employees. The company has some 1,900 employees altogether on Long Island; the remainder work in Melville or Bohemia.
Once the improvements are completed, the company will vacate Building 5 in Bethpage, which currently serves as the headquarters building for AEW&EW Systems. Building 5, completed in 1944, is leased by the company from the U.S. Navy.
Northrop Grumman's ISS, headquartered in Dallas, Tex., is a premier aerospace systems integration enterprise. ISS has the capabilities to design, develop, integrate, produce and support complete systems, as well as airframe subsystems, for airborne surveillance and battle management aircraft, early warning aircraft, airborne electronic warfare aircraft and air combat aircraft.
