Ref: 031/2001

BAE Systems has received two of five $2 million contracts from the U.S. Army’s Tank, Automotive, and Armaments Command (TACOM) for the concept exploration phase of a programme to develop alternatives to anti-personnel mines.

Both BAE Systems Information and Electronic Warfare Systems (IEWS), Nashua, New Hampshire, and BAE Systems Integrated Defence Solutions, Austin, Texas, will develop separately the concepts they submitted to the Army. The Army is seeking to eliminate indiscriminate, target activated anti-personnel munitions currently used to protect anti-tank minefields.

The Army programme, known as the Rapid Tactical Terrain Limiter (RATTLER), is under the direction of the U.S. Army Project Manager for Mines, Countermine and Demolitions at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. During the concept exploration phase, these BAE Systems companies will provide proof of principle demonstrations and proposals for follow-on development of their separate concepts. The government plans to select one or two contractors to continue the programme into a proposed $50 million programme definition and risk reduction (PDRR) phase.

BAE Systems Information & Electronic Warfare Systems employs 4,400 people at eight major facilities in five states. The business unit is a major producer of aircraft self-protection systems and tactical surveillance and intelligence systems for all branches of the armed forces. Other major business areas include microwave, mission and space electronics; infrared imaging; and automated mission planning systems.

BAE Systems Integrated Defence Solutions employs 1,200 people in the design, development and manufacture of a wide range of tactical products and services including systems integration, chemical detection, camouflage, expendable countermeasures & dispensers, and low cost precision guidance.

BAE Systems North America employs 22,000 people in the design, development, integration, manufacture and support of a wide range of advanced aerospace products and intelligent electronic systems for government and commercial customers.
