BAE Systems has won contracts from Lockheed Martin valued at more than $33 million for continued production of Advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) avionics systems for the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The contracts were issued to the company's Advanced Systems unit in Greenlawn, New York, and will support avionics requirements for the upgraded Air Force F-16 block 50/52 aircraft, the Peace Xenia programme for Greece, and for other F-16 aircraft.

Designated the AN/APX-113, the Advanced IFF system is a combined interrogator transponder currently employed on fighter and surveillance aircraft of 12 nations. The AN/APX-113 has been in production since 1992, with more than 800 already built for defence users around the world.

Recent upgrades to the Advanced IFF system include both data link compatibility and expanded IFF modes of operation. "These key enhancements continue to ensure that this vital identification system meets the needs of the defence community over the next 10 years," said Pat McMahon, vice president, mark XII IFF programmes for Advanced Systems.
