BAE Systems has fought off tough competition from European and U.S. suppliers to win the first competitive contract by the French government for army ammunition, the company announced today.
The strategically important contract was secured by the Small Arms Ammunition business of BAE Systems RO Defence based at Radway Green, near Crewe in Cheshire.
The three-year agreement is worth 5 million to the Radway Green site, which will supply NATO-qualified 5.56mm rounds to the French defence procurement executive, the DGA (Delegation Generale pour l'Armement).
For what was the DGA's first open tender for ammunition, Small Arms Ammunition teamed with a French partner, TDA Armements SAS (a joint venture of Thales and Daimler-Chrysler Aerospace) and was advised of its success this month.
Small Arms Ammunition director, Julie Shearn, said: "This is a very important contract for the business and it delivers on our strategy to extend the principles of the UK Ministry of Defence Partnering Agreement to an international customer.
"The security of a three-year contract gives us an opportunity to work in an open and innovative manner with our new French customer. This is an excellent result for the Radway Green team, who worked hard with our colleagues at TDA and across RO Defence to deliver the winning bid."
