ATK Awarded $34 Million Contract to Produce Propulsion System and Warhead For Brimstone Missile System
Dec 7, 2000
ATK (Alliant Techsystems, NYSE: ATK) said it has been awarded a contract valued at $34 million from Boeing to produce the solid propulsion system and warhead for the United Kingdom's Brimstone anti-armor missile system. Production under the contract will continue through 2005, with missile system integration and production scheduled to begin the following year in the United Kingdom.
An advanced fully autonomous millimeter-wave anti-armor missile, the Brimstone system includes three missiles mounted on a smart launcher that can operate from fast jet aircraft, initially the Harrier, Tornado, and Eurofighter. Boeing is under contract to prime contractor Alenia Marconi Systems, Borehamwood, England, to provide the missile's airframe and major system components.
ATK Missile Products Company will manage the Brimstone contract, with propulsion system production occurring at its manufacturing facility at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in Rocket Center, W. Va.
Alex Priskos, president, ATK Missile Products Company, said the Brimstone contract award continues a long ATK heritage of developing and manufacturing high-quality, repeatable propulsion systems and warheads for the world's most important tactical missile systems.
"ATK Missile Products Company has more than 50 years of experience in the design, development, and production of propulsion systems, warheads, and metal parts for tactical missile systems," said Priskos. "We are pleased to carry on this tradition with the Brimstone system, which is destined to become a mainstay in the United Kingdom's tactical missile arsenal."
Priskos said ATK Missile Products Company programs span both air-launched and ground-launched systems, including Hellfire, AIM-9X Sidewinder, Maverick, Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile, Sensor Fuzed Weapon, and TOW II infantry weapon system.
Headquartered in Rocket Center, W. Va., ATK Missile Products Company is part of ATK's Aerospace segment, which comprises the corporation's propulsion and composite structures operations. The Aerospace segment employs approximately 2,300 people in California, Florida, Mississippi, New York, Utah, and West Virginia. Sales in fiscal year 2000 were $530 million.
ATK is a $1.1 billion aerospace and defense company with leading market positions in munitions, smart weapons and precision capabilities, propulsion, and composite structures. The company, which is headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., employs approximately 6,400 people and has three business segments: Conventional Munitions, Aerospace, and Defense Systems.
